There was music, singing, dancing and plenty of imagination when the little ones of SAVF Kleutervriend Nursery School took to the stage for their 2026 concert.

Titled Khanya’s Hot Air Balloon Adventure, the concert captivated parents, grandparents, family members and friends as the young performers took the audience on a colourful journey that was certainly not quite what their little adventurer had planned.

The story followed Khanya, an adventurous little girl who had booked herself a spot on a hot air balloon. With her backpack checked, goggles firmly in place and her GPS programmed for her first destination, she was ready for take-off. There was, however, one small problem. It soon became apparent that Khanya’s GPS had not been updated recently.

Her unexpected journey first took her to the farm of legendary South African musician Mannetjies Roux, a mere 8 000 km off course. From there, her adventure continued all the way to Colombia, before another wrong turn near the rainbow saw her landing in the Wild West of Texas.

Each destination brought a new opportunity for the children to entertain their audience through song, dance and music, bringing the different settings and characters to life on stage.

Eventually, after one final attempt to find her way, Khanya’s hot air balloon made its way back to South Africa, landing exactly where she had wanted to be all along. While the journey may have been filled with wrong turns, the concert carried a meaningful message for everyone watching.

The children were reminded that taking the wrong route does not always mean that something has gone wrong. Sometimes, an unexpected detour can lead us to beautiful places and experiences we might never have discovered otherwise. The concert concluded with a special group item, celebrating the faith and gratitude that form an important part of the school’s values.

“We might be small, but our God is big,” was the powerful reminder shared through the final performance. According to the principal Liana Nieuwenhuis: “We are blessed beyond measure.”

For the children of SAVF Kleutervriend, the 2026 concert was more than simply a morning or evening of entertainment. It was a celebration of childhood, imagination, friendship and faith, with a little lesson about life's unexpected journeys thrown in for good measure.

And judging by the smiles and applause from the audience, Khanya’s rather unconventional adventure proved to be a journey worth taking.

When plant ecologist Sue Milton-Dean arrived in Prince Albert in 1987, the Karoo was a research subject. Nearly four decades later, the region has become a place she interprets both scientifically and emotionally - one whose intricate relationships are far easier to damage than to rebuild.
