Barberton Nature Reserve offers prime escape for wildlife and birding enthusiasts
Situated just 30 km from Barberton and around 15 km from Nelspruit, the reserve is home to the scenic Noordkaap River and the locally known 'Barberton Sea'.

Barberton Nature Reserve remains one of the Lowveld’s most quietly captivating conservation areas. It is open to the public and rich in birdlife, mountain scenery, and occasional wildlife sightings.
Situated just 30 km from Barberton and around 15 km from Mbombela (Nelspruit), this 2,500-hectare reserve is home to the scenic Noordkaap River and the locally known 'Barberton Sea'.
Although sightings of large game are not always guaranteed, the reserve is home to animals such as kudu, nyala, zebra, mountain reedbuck, duiker, impala, klipspringer, vervet monkeys, blue wildebeest, and even the elusive leopard. That said, many locals report that they don’t always, or have never spotted any game during their visit. It you want to visit the reserve the experience should be more about being surrounded by nature and enjoying peaceful a day out.

One of the reserve’s biggest drawcards is its exceptional birdlife. With over 300 bird species recorded in the area, bird clubs and photographers frequently plan day trips to the reserve. The 'Barberton Sea' area is particularly popular with birders, offering ideal conditions for waterfowl, raptors, and endemic Lowveld species.
Facilities at the reserve include picnic spots, braai areas, and walking trails suitable for day visits. Self-drive routes are available, though visitors are encouraged to use high-clearance vehicles for parts of the route. While no overnight accommodation is offered inside the reserve, there are several options in and around Barberton and Mbombela.
According to online sources, entry to the reserve costs around R50 per person, but it is advisable to confirm pricing and availability directly.
