SA Sport and Hunting Federation brings national championship to Barberton
The event highlighted not only the high standards of competitive shooting, but also the Federation’s commitment to responsible firearm ownership, training, and ethical hunting.

The SA Sport and Hunting Federation (SASHF) hosted its prestigious national competition in Barberton from August 7-9, 2025, drawing top marksmen and hunters from across South Africa. The event highlighted not only the high standards of competitive shooting, but also the Federation’s commitment to responsible firearm ownership, training, and ethical hunting.

The SASHF is an accredited national body dedicated to promoting ethical hunting and shooting sports. It offers structured training and assessment to help firearm owners develop real skill and proficiency, while ensuring that all members operate within the strict requirements of South African law.

As a SAPS-recognised organisation, the Federation issues Dedicated Hunter and Dedicated Sport Shooter status. This is an essential step for anyone wishing to own more than four firearms, take part in higher-level competitions, or obtain certain firearm endorsements.

Membership of SASHF opens the door to far more than competitive sport. The Federation provides:
-Comprehensive training to help members understand their firearms fully and handle them safely.
-Legal recognition that empowers members to acquire and license firearms responsibly.
-Access to provincial and national competitions, where practical marksmanship is tested in simulated hunting conditions.
-A strong community of like-minded enthusiasts, where families, juniors, and veterans are all welcome.

Affiliated with Safari Club International and the National Rifle Association, SASHF maintains high international standards while remaining firmly rooted in South Africa’s hunting and sporting traditions.
The Barberton championship featured multiple divisions, including rifle hunting, bow hunting, shotgun events, and range sport. Competitors were assessed not just on accuracy, but also on ammunition control, shot placement, and adherence to ethical principles. This emphasis reflects the Federation’s core belief: owning a firearm comes with the responsibility to use it safely, ethically, and effectively.
