Gateway Christian School’s night market started as a once-off event in 2023. Initially planned as a single gathering, the market exceeded expectations with overwhelming support from the community. It didn’t take long before both vendors and visitors began requesting more regular events, and the school responded by making it a term-end tradition.

The market, held on the school grounds in Barberton, has quickly become a local highlight. Although the event is organised and coordinated by Annalène Lubbe, a remedial and intervention teacher at the school, she emphasised that it is a team effort. “The staff and management of the school each assist in putting up lights, allocating stall spaces, making music, and some even host their own stalls,” she said.

More than just a shopping experience, the market is a community event, filled with warmth, fun and good food. On average, around 30 stalls are set up, featuring a mix of vendors from Barberton and also from Nelspruit. The offerings range from delicious local eats and crafts to handmade goods and gifts, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere for all ages.

The most recent market, held on June 27, was forecasted to be the coldest day of the week. “Thanks to two boma fires and five gas heaters strategically placed around the venue, no one had reason to feel the chill,” said Lubbe. Visitors were instead met with warm hearts, full tummies, and lively conversation. Laughter from children and adults alike filled the night, bringing the school grounds to life.

The success of Gateway’s night market is rooted in its sense of local unity. Families, friends, and visitors from across the De Kaap Valley come not only to browse and buy, but to connect. “These markets have become fellowship events like no other.”

As the Gateway night market continues to grow in popularity, it has become clear that it is more than just an event. It is a reflection of Barberton’s resilient and caring community spirit, one that gathers, celebrates, and supports each other, term after term.
