Bridging the skills gap as MMS Academy empowers the community
Mzansi Mining Skills Academy (MMS) has positioned itself as a practical, community driven response to unemployment and the growing demand for skilled labour in the mining, construction and industrial sectors.
A local training initiative is quietly working to equip residents with the skills needed to access opportunities in some of South Africa’s most demanding industries. The official opening of the training institute in Barberton took place on May 1 at 88 Crown Street. (Where FNB use to be).
Mzansi Mining Skills Academy (MMS) has positioned itself as a practical, community driven response to unemployment and the growing demand for skilled labour in the mining, construction and industrial sectors. Established with a clear focus on bridging the gap between education and employment, the academy offers accredited training programs designed to prepare individuals for real workplace environments.
The academy is proudly Black woman owned and youth driven, led by a dedicated mother, Emerldah Khoza and daughter, Thandeka Njomo as the management team. Their vision extends beyond training, focusing on empowerment, confidence building and long term economic impact within the community.
The academy operates in full compliance with national regulations and is accredited through the Department of Labour, ensuring that all training meets recognised occupational health and safety standards. “This compliance driven approach not only benefits learners but also provides assurance to employers seeking competent and certified workers,” Thandeka said.

What sets the academy apart is its strong emphasis on practical, hands on training. Thandeka said that learners are exposed to real equipment and simulated workplace conditions, allowing them to build both confidence and competence before entering the job market.
“Training is delivered by experienced facilitators with industry knowledge, and each program includes formal assessments that lead to recognised certification.”
Courses offered cover a wide range of essential skills, including earth moving equipment operation, health and safety training, hazard identification and risk assessment, first aid, firefighting, fall protection, lifting and load handling, as well as construction and scaffolding related training. In addition, the academy provides business, supervisory and workplace readiness programs aimed at preparing individuals for both employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

At the heart of Mzansi Mining Skills Academy is a strong commitment to community development. The institution actively creates access to training for local youth and unemployed individuals, bringing skills development directly into underserved areas. By engaging with local businesses and industry stakeholders, the academy is also working to open pathways to employment and self-employment for its learners.

The initiative was founded in response to a clear need identified within Barberton and surrounding areas, where many individuals have the potential to succeed but lack access to accredited, practical training. By addressing this gap, the academy aims to provide skills that are not only relevant but in demand, particularly within the mining and technical sectors.

Looking ahead, Mzansi Mining Skills Academy has ambitious plans for growth. These include expanding its training programs to cover more high demand technical skills, increasing learner intake, and strengthening partnerships with mining companies, SETAs and other industry stakeholders. There are also plans to introduce entrepreneurship incubation programs and to bring more learnership opportunities into Barberton.
Through its work, the academy is steadily building a reputation as a skills development hub with the potential to make a lasting impact, not only in Barberton but across the broader region.
